This insignia was designed by CMI to help build Esprit De Corps for officers who complete specialized training in the response to the active assailant. Designed to acknowledge first responders (patrolmen and patrolwomen) who possess elevated training in tactics, weapons, breaching, and ballistic shields, they bridge the gap between the normal training that patrol officers receive and the extensive training that SWAT officers receive. Tactical Patrol Officers bring the ability to immediately begin to hunt down and engage active killers, or contain a situation with greater safety until the arrival of specialists (SWAT negotiators).

The appeal of the TPO Insignia^© is that it is very professional looking, not overly aggressive or politically incorrect and symbolizes the ideal characteristics of a Tactical Patrol Officer^©.
